Discovery Night was supposed to be last Thursday, the 24th. But Utah got a freak Ice Storm. I honestly didn't think it was a big deal, until I heard Ry get off the bus and almost instantly I heard her crying. I ran outside to get her, and I slipped down the stairs. Everything was covered in ice! So the school cancelled all activities for the day, to prevent any accidents. Me and Rhett spent 2 hours breaking all the ice off our driveway, because usually if we don't, the ice never melts on our side of the street. But of course, the next day, the weather warmed up and everything melted anyways.
So they rescheduled Discovery Night for tonight. J wasn't able to go because he had to work late. So I bundled up all the kiddos and we got there early. We started by going to the cafeteria and enjoying free dinner from Papa Johns, along with water and cookies. After we ate, we went to the classrooms to play some games, and each kid got a free book.
We then went to Ry's class first to see her Discovery Night project. It was a penguin she decorated and wrote about. Then we played a few rounds of Sight Word Bingo.
After, we headed to Rhett's class. Everyone got blue ribbons for their projects, but he was so proud of himself. And I have to say, a lot of kids put so much effort into the projects.
We finally ended at the Book Fair because it was 50% off your total order. And the kiddos love books so much, we got a lot of books pretty cheap. It was such a fun night, and I'm so glad West Point has so many great programs in place for students and families.

Naked Eggs
This week we have been helping Rhett do a Science Fair Project for school. I asked him what he wanted to do his project on, but he couldn't think of one certain topic. So I had him look online at a website for experiments at www.sciencebuddies.org They have a TON of ideas, but nothing there peaked his interests. So I had him look through his science books and luckily Grandma gave him "The Mad Scientist's Notebook" for his birthday and he found "Naked Eggs."
The Purpose of the experiment was "How can I see inside of an egg without the shell breaking and will the egg bounce with hardly any shell?"
His Hypothesis was "If I soak the eggs long enough in vinegar, the shells will dissolve."
It was then time to start the Procedure. The first day he started by putting 6 medium eggs in a pan, filled with White Vinegar, and then covered the pan with foil.
After 24 hours, he took the eggs out of the fridge to see how they looked. The vinegar reacted to the egg's shell making it bubble and dissolve.
The more the egg's shell dissolved, the more water from the vinegar got into the egg helping it bounce. From 6 inches the egg bounced, from 12 inches the egg bounced, from 18 inches the egg broke.
He then put the remaining eggs back into the pan, covered with fresh vinegar, and covered with foil and put back into the fridge. After another 24 hours, he took the eggs out to see the progress of the eggs. The egg's shell was more dissolved, and more water got into the egg causing it to double in size.
He then tried to bounce the eggs again. From 6 inches the egg bounced, but this time after 12 inches the egg broke.
He put the remaining eggs in to the pan again, filled with fresh vinegar, covered with foil, and put back into fridge. After 24 hours (72 hours total) of sitting in vinegar, he took the eggs out again to check the progress. The egg's shell has completely dissolved, and you can finally see the yoke inside the egg. The egg has tripled in size.
He tried the bounce test once more. But from 6 inches, with no shell at all, the egg broke.
His Conclusion was "After 3 full days of sitting in vinegar, the shells have completely dissolved proving my Hypothesis correct."
His Practical Application was "By doing this experiment, I was able to prove if my Hypothesis was right or wrong."
We are just so incredibly proud of Rhett and his hard work through this project. He was able to type up all his notes and label his board the correct way. He's pretty excited to show off his work at Discovery Night tomorrow.

Birthday Celebrations
Today was my birthday and what a great day it has been.
J was able to get the day off, so as I slept in, he got the kiddos off the school. I then awoke to the wonderful aroma of Breakfast in Bed.
We spent the rest of the day. just being lazy and relaxing while watching our DVR shows. At 5pm, Mom came over to babysit the kiddos so J could take me out to dinner. We went to Outback Steakhouse, because we had a gift card. I can't remember the last time we had a long, quiet meal without kiddos. As much as I love them, I really enjoyed our alone time together. We sat there and talked for 2 hours! It felt like we were dating again. He bought me Scrabble Flash and got our waitress to bring me a free sundae for dessert. He and the waitress even sang to me...I know he was probably embarrassed, but I thought it was incredibly sweet!
We decided we needed to get back home so Mom could get home. When I walked in, I was taken back by another surprise from my good friend Annie...accompanied with homemade mini doughnuts.
Kenna even got all dressed up because she wanted to look pretty like Mommy...Melt my heart!
I was getting the kiddos into bed, and cleaning up the downstairs when I hear J calling my name to get upstairs. I told him, "One Minute. I'm just cleaning up first." He was so insistent, that he came downstairs and told me he needed me. I thought it odd, and hurried upstairs. To be welcomed with the best friends a girl could have...Liz, Mikaela, Annie, and Allison. They were kidnapping me to take me for dessert. So we went to Chili's for some yummy chips and salsa and Paradise Pie...mmmm!!!! They even got me a cute gift of movie gift cards, jolly ranchers, and candy bars. I have to say, this birthday was an amazing one. Thank you to my sweet family and friends for making it so memorable!
